Scan Disk Restarting - Some Possibilities

Keywords: Scan Disk Restarting

Some possibilities for Scan Disk Restarting...
  1. Scandisk log file (yea, scandisk stops/restarts from its' own activity)

  2. Antivirus software

  3. Find Fast or other 'indexer'

  4. Any task manager/scheduler that may periodically access something on disk (or something running in background - usually as a service).

  5. If networked, something like SMS that is ALWAYS hogging disk & cpu in background (but barely so!) at the least opportune times...

  6. Growing/shrinking (or maybe just swapping) windows swap/page file

  7. Incoming email or something like schedule+

  8. Some sort of DMI tool (local to the pc or from elsewhere on network), or disk monitoring utility (like 'SMART') that does a check of disk on some schedule or when it 'thinks' system is relatively idle. Some do test-writes or create temp files.

  9. SNMP agent/client

  10. If PC has shared resources (disk/printer/modem), activity related to updating the browse-list; or, external access to shared resource.

  11. If telephony is set to record log of modem activity, almost anything can cause it to write to log.

  12. Anything similar AOL instant messenger that 'listens' for something specific to appear on net - usually with some kink of disk-based 'hit-list'.

  13. DHCP activity (renewing lease, etc.)

  14. Hot-linked DDE/OLE (shared) document updates

  15. APM activity
And, from what I've seen - I'm not sure that scandisk 'only' restarts on a disk-write. I suspect that it reacts to almost any significant disk activity.

good luck!
