Adding a Machine to an AD Domain

Keywords: Adding a Machine to an AD Domain

Question:

I'm working on a project in which the machine will be added to our Win2k domain (WWU). Looking at the source example on the Tech Support pages, I see that it adds the object on our AD server, but what I seem to be missing is making the system believe its a member of the group...

(Script in Q: http://techsupt.winbatch.com/webcgi/webbatch.exe?techsupt/nftechsupt.web+WIL~Extenders/ADSI+Adding~a~workstation~(NT4~and~W2k)~to~the~domain.txt)

So I guess my question is this: If I use the script from the TechSupport site, where am I when the script finishes? I would have a new object on the AD server, but what is the status of my local machine? What do I need to do to it to make it believe its part of the domain?

Answer:

Generally, when a client computer joins a domain the computer object is created automatically. Some create the computer object before joining a computer to a domain so they can control the location of the associated computer object in the Active Directory structure and control who can modify the computer object attributes. The example you are referring to illustrates the manually object creation task.

A lot of things happen when a computer joins a domain; Services are started, GUID's get assigned, local password accounts are created and a lot more. Most of this goes on on the client side.

There is an excellent example in the tech support database that shows you how to perform the client side of the task programmatically. See: Article:W15186 to find it.
