Missing msfvw32 dll

Keywords: Missing msfvw32 dll msfvw32.dll Windows 2008 R2 Server Core

Question:

I am trying to run a compiled script on a Windows 2008 R2 Server Core based system. WHen I run my compiled WinBatch script, I receieve a message stating: 'The program cannot start because msvfw32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.' Does winbatch really need a DLL designed for video?

Answer:

Yes, WinBatch needs the dll, it is a standard system dll that has been around since Win 95 and WinNT 3.1, and it has nothing to do with 'video'. WinBatch dialogs use it to render device independent bitmaps. The Full Version of Windows 2008 R2 has both the 32-bit and 64-bit dlls. We suspect the CORE version doesn't. You should be able to find a version that will work with Windows 2008 R2 Server Core. I have version 6.1.7600.16385 on my 64-bit 2008 R2 system. msvfw32.dll would need to be placed in the sysWOW64 directory.
