IntControl 67 and Windows98 Blue Screen of Death

Keywords: IntControl 67 Win98 Blue Screen of Death

Question:

We're seeing a Windows crash when we try to shutdown with IntControl(67,0,0,0,0). This is on brand new gear running Windows 98 Second Edition. Has anyone else reported a problem like this? This is 99G of the compiler. I saw that there was some documentation changes to IntControl 67 with 99J but I did not update because we're right at the end of a testing cycle.

We get a blue screen Fatal Exception 0E at 016F:BFF8CC32.

Answer:

I've just spent some time searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base. A search under Windows 98 Second Edition, keyword shutdown, produced several articles, including the availability of a "Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement".

The bad news for me is that installing the supplement doesn't help. The good news for you is that this appears to be a 98SE problem not a WinBatch problem. For example, installing the supplement requires a reboot and that crashes without any WinBatch involvement. (Unless of course Microsoft used WinBatch for the shutdown supplement :-)

More on Win98 SR2 and Blue Screen of Death

Question:

I was wondering if anybody had gotten resolution from Microsoft on the "Blue Screen of Death" problem with Win98 SR2 upon an IntControl 67.

Also was wondering how to detect SR2, and if there's a workaround for the reboot. (I seem to remember a PC Week article about running rundll in conjunction with shell32.dll to do a reboot, but heck if I remember.)

Answer:

We were experiencing blue screens with IntControl 67 on new 98SE systems here this September. A search of the Microsoft knowledge base (keyword shutdown, I think) turned up a surprising number of hits, including the patch mentioned above. Our experience was that the patch did not help. Our problem was eventually traced to a sound card driver. It seems that whatever changed in the shutdown sequence caught a lot of peripheral vendors by surprise.

You might check the WIL help file for various new WinVersion parameters. Codes 2 and 3 may be useful. To detect SR2 aka Second Edition I use WinVersion (2) which will return "2222" where Win98 SR1 returns "1998", you'll need to check for WinVersion (0) too, which returns "10" for Win98 & "00" for Win95
