IntControl 76 Explained

Question:

I have never used IC(76) (set computername) until today.

Today, I found that it changes the name in some places, but not all. In particular, the System applet (of control panel) still shows the old name. Searching through the registry finds many occurences of both the old and new name. Yes, I rebooted after doing the IC(76) before doing any checking.

Is there a cannonical registry location that is the one that counts for the computer name? Is there any other way to query the current value?

BTW, the definitive answer to the question is (or should be) "Can you ping it?" And the answer is, yes, we can ping it (from another machine on the network), using the new name.

Answer:

I know of at least 3 different computer names. For example on my desktop, instead of "My Computer" ir says "Blue Laptop". On the local network the machine name is "BigBlue" and it is also know as local067.winbatch.com, and can also be referred to as \\10.1.1.67

I believe IntControl 76 changes the local network (NetBios?) name. The users "pet" name, "Blue Laptop" and the tcpip Internet name local067.winbatch.com remain unchanged.
