How to Turn File Sharing off on Windows 95

Keywords: disable file sharing win95

Question:

Is there a way to turn File Share off on Windows 95?

I am looking for something to prevent my users to share their local drives/directories (security problem).

Just to turn it off during login. If they want to re-install File And Print Share again, they would have to reboot and during login I would remove it again.

Answer:

This can be done on W95 by changing the registry settings under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE for:

File Sharing is under :

Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network\[NoFileSharing]
Print Sharing is under:
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network\[NoPrintSharing]
Please remember that these policy settings are "global" on the PC. They affect all users on the PC. When you alter these settings they don't take effect until after you reboot the PC. This means that disabling them in the login script won't cause the print/file sharing to be disabled until after a reboot. Between the time that the change is made and the reboot occurs it would be possible for the user to go back in and re-enable the print/file sharing (via registry hacking).

IIRC, using a policy file will result in this setting being fully enforcable. Just altering it in the login script results in making the change after the point in the boot process when the policy setting gets read and put into effect.
