Debug Message comes up when Installing to Local Drive

Keywords: debug message 1004 error

Question:

I'm installing WB from diskette and the first time through, I got a shortcutmake error. Then I tried installing again, and the second time, the Debug screen came up, and the next statement is, "Message("File Rename Error", a), and when I hit Next, it says the file rename error is 1004.

I have a previous version of Winbatch on my system, in a different directory from the directory I'm trying to install to. Any ideas?

Answer:

There are a few instances where the debug screen, or an error, will come up during installation.
  1. One case is what we call the PMD problem, where the installation has gone just fine, but at the very end of the installation, where you're about 99 percent complete, it dies.

In this case, the installation has gone OK, and the error is incidental.

  2. In the Second case, an aggressive virus scanner is causing problems with the WinBatch installation procedure. You may want to disable the virus scanner, install winbatch, and restart the virus scanner.

  3. In the Third case, the debug screen will come up as you described above, and the error occurs because for some reason, Winbatch can't write to your Start Menu. This could be because a directory or a file has been marked read-only.

We recommend going into Explorer, and deleting all your Winbatch directories, and reinstalling. From Windows 95, right click on the Start button, then hit Explore, and right-click on the Winbatch directory, and delete it. Then reinstall Winbatch.

  4. If you are trying to install from floppy disks, and your floppies are corrupt, you can also get this message right away during installation. Make a scratch directory on your local drive, and then try copying all your files from your floppies to your hard drive. If your floppies are corrupt, you'll get a Windows error when you try to copy the files from your floppy drive.

You'll need to get replacement disks, or download another copy from our web site.

  5. If you're installing from a CD, copy all the files from the CD to the hard drive, and install from there. That often resolves this problem.
