Issue with Downloaded CHM files

Question:

Just downloaded the help files... they do not work on my PC (WinXP SP2 IE7) - The Contents, Index and Search buttons all work as they should and all the topics are listed, but the right hand panel is blank and stays blank no matter what you click.

If I right click and select 'Keyword Lookup' in WBStudio, the right frame in the help file is empty.

I may have found the problem, when the files were extracted from the zip file to the WinBatch folder they have a security block on them which asks if you want to open the file.

Answer:

I was able to reproduce the problem you were seeing.

ISSUE: Topics in the .chm file cannot be viewed when you click Save in the File Download dialog box, and you then try to open the file.

CAUSE: Windows Security update 896358 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.

RESOLUTION: In the File Download dialog box, click Save, and then choose where you want to save the .chm file. Then, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

  1. Double-click the .chm file.
  2. In the Open File-Security Warning dialog box, click to clear the Always ask before opening this file check box.
  3. Click Open.

Method 2

  1. Right-click the CHM file, and then click Properties.
  2. Click Unblock.
  3. Double-click the .chm file to open the file.

Special Note: Zip files are blocked by Internet Explorer. If you use Explorer to unzip the files all of the (hazardous) files contained in the zip file will be blocked. However if you use some other zip utility ( winzip, pkzip, etc.) the unzipped files will not be blocked.
