USB Support in WinBatch

Question:

We develop instrumentation, and use Winbatch with serial extender to provide the PC interface. However with the demise of the serial ports on new laptops, are there plans afoot to bring out a USB extender for winbatch?

Answer:

A USB extender is on the wish list. No firm plans of as yet.

You may need to consider having the USB device driver written so that it emulates a serial port when the USB device is attached to the system.

The trouble with a USB extender is that although USB is a standard for the physical interface connection, it takes a vendor-supplied device driver to actually make any particular USB device function properly. Writing an extender to interface with USB devices might actually be impossible. The most that you might reasonbly expect to hope for in a USB extender is something that enumerates the USB root hubs, external hubs and devices that are currently plugged in and what the device & mfg identification information is for those devices.
