Installing Various Printers and Setting as Default

Keywords: setting default printer

Question:

Is it possibgle to open up admin rights on a w2kpro machine (users have only user rights - restricted) so that the users can go ahead and install whatever local printer and/or devices (i.e., pda's) they may have?

I'm using the RunWithLogon function to set the printer, and it launches the add printer applet fine and the user can install a local printer but at the end when it copies files it gives an error saying it cannot set as default, then when u hit finish it says printer already added. once you click cancel the applet goes away ad the printer is added, but not as the default. Also, the users will be receiving various printers and handhelds, with installation cd's. Problem is that they are all over the US and they will be having many types of unknown printers, so they basically need to be able to install it themselves, but they are restricted users, so opening upt he machine would be ideal, and when they reboot they lose the rights which would be perfect.

Answer:

You have to look at the RunWithLogon flags setting carefully.

Each user on the system has a default printers setting. Whose default printer are you trying to set. probably the user's, but maybe your RunWithLogon is set up to try to change the Administrators?

Maybe you need several passes. One to install the printer but not make it default. Then when back as a normal user make it the default?
