Positioning Shortcut Icon on Desktop

Keywords:   position short

Question:

Could anyone tell me where I can find information about the location of the shortcuts/icons on the windows desktop ?

Is there a winbatch command that allow me to position a shortcut at a certain place on the desktop ? By shortcut/icon location I mean the coordinates of the icons on the desktop. How does windows keep track of the positions of the shortcuts in order to restore them to the last saved positions?

Answer:

We don't have a function to position icons but in theory it should be able to be done... There apparently is a file in the Windows directory called "ShellIconCache" that has all the info. But no one has as of yet has figured out how to work with that file.

Another user reported the following:

My problem was to install a desktop shortcut which was so obvious that it could not be over looked by the user.

You have indicated that WinBatch could create a shortcut but that the location was fixed, and that "WinBach had no Drag and Drop Capabilities". I wanted the shortcut "Dead center" of the screen.

I found that placing the mouse on the desktop and Right clicking causes a menu to display:

                  for  neW
                   for  Sortcut
            Then enter the "Command Line"  {ENTER}
            Then enter the  Shortcut  TITLE
*** This may not be the Case in Win95/98 ***

Anyway WinBatch did the trick ! I can now create a shortcut anywhere on the desktop. I just thought that the feedback would be useful.
