How to do a Massive IP Address Change

Keywords: massive ip address change

Question:

I am getting ready to change the network IP addresses on all the PC on a hospital network. There are about 450 static IP address on PC's running Windows 95. I am thinking about building a screen where on the startup of the script I would enter the new IP address and then let it run. Oh, just to add a little interest in the process I have to assign new "computer name" bases on an ID code to each PC as well. This also could be entered into the startup screen. What it would appear that I need to do is get into the Network Neighborhood properties.

Any ideas before I start this heinous task?

Answer:

The .ZIP file below contains a script that does some manipulation of the Network Control panel [for Win95] applet via the Control Manager extender. This was written with WinBatch 97 and an older version of Control Manager, so there may be some updates that need to be made for it to work properly.

I would recommend that you dump the locally administered static IP addresses and implement a DHCP server. This will make long term management of IP addresses easier.

As for making changes to a locally administered static IP address and the computer name, you can do those via direct registry modifications. Check out the RegXXX() functions in the WIL help file. The computer name is stored in two different places and the TCP/IP host name is also stored in one place. The static IP addresses , if used, are stored in the registry key for each network adapter that is bound to TCP/IP with a static IP address.
