Services on Vista

 Keywords: service Vista

Microsoft is tightening up security for services on Vista. Services can no longer arbitrarily access the interactive desktop as of Windows Vista. If you need something to execute in the context of an interactive user, you run an "agent" in their session at the time they logon, and the agent takes care of talking to your server via some sort of RPC mechanism. Having this "agent" being memory-resident is Microsoft's *recommended* best-practices solution.

Any solution that requires the user to enter their credentials, or any application that manipulates the user's credentials as part of automating a Windows logon is by definition a security risk, unless, of course, the application is the Windows Logon UI.
