wntSvcControl Stop Error

wntSvcControl Error "617 Invalid or Unacceptable Control Code" when trying to stop the Plug and Play Service.

Answer:

You are passing a valid control code of zero for a stop. However apparently the Plug and Play service doesn�t support a stop request. When I attempted this on my Win 7 system I was able to reproduce the error. I then inspected the WWWBATCH.INI file for extended error details and found the following entry:

[WWWNT34I]
LastError=1052 (ControlService)

This basically indicates �The requested control is not valid for this service�.

Apparently the Plug and Play service doesn�t support being stopped. This can be confirmed by going to the service Control manager, you will see that all possible requests for plug and play service are disabled.

wntSvcControl will not be able to do anything the Service Control manager cannot.

As I understand it, the Plug and Play service by default cannot be changed unless you disable it in the Bios. there may be some other way via the Windows registry, but that would most likely demand a reboot.
