Winbatch-OpenOffice Database Script Samples
OpenOffice is advertised as a free alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite. You can download and install OO on a PC that
already has Office installed with no problems. This zip archive contains 4 scripts and a sample Access file which allow
you to explore writing scripts to create and manipulate data tables in OO. All scripts require you have OO installed –
they were written against OO version 3.2; the Access table was created in Office 2003.
The scripts are meant to run independently so there is duplication of UDF’s and code in each. Each script is commented as
to it’s purpose.
To be honest, OO’s Base application is no match for Access, therefore 2 of the scripts concentrate on mapping OO data
types to ADO data types (ADO/OLEDB is used to connect to an Access table in the sample .mdb.
- OO_DBContext.wbt
This script looks at the OpenOffice Registration Service as well as how to list out ‘drivers’ it uses to connect
to remote data sources, i.e. csv files, dbase, ADO, ODBC.
- OO_xmlRS2Base.wbt
My first interest in OO’s base was working with persisted recordsets (ADO recordsets saved as XML). This script
allows you to choose a table from the sample .mdb which is persisted, then that table is replicated in an OO
database file, created on the fly.
- OO_AccessTbl2Base.wbt
Similar to the previous script, only skips the xml creation and replicates the table structure directly from the Access Table.
- OO_tbl2base_dm.wbt
Attempts the same replication as the previous 2 scripts, but uses OO’s driver manager instead of an ADO connection.
NOTE: in the final three scripts, the same OO file name is used and it is erased if it exists prior to running the main
body of the script.
