McAfee virus scanner problem

Keywords: McAfee virus scanner problem

Question:

All of the executables that we have created using WinBatch (compiler), are being marked by McAfee 4.5 as being infected with a virus. It adds a *.vir extension to each file, rendering that file useless, until we rename it (and then McAfee just changes it back again). We do not want to disable scanning of executables (kind of defeats the purpose of scanning for viruses), but need to know why they are being tagged as viruses, and if there is a fix for it.

Reply:

WinBatch exe's do some amazing tricks.

I'm not sure but here are some theories.

  1. (ugh) you really do have some kind of virus.
  2. WinBatch has code in it that *may* resemble some viruses (Exe reads own file, uncompression routines have patched exe)

If you have your virus scanner to scan for unknown type virues AND you have an old version of the virus tables, then WinBatch might get flagged.

This was a problem we saw back in 1999, but since then McAfee has updated their information to not falsely claim a virus.
