Arm Architecture

 Keywords: Arm Architecture Processor x86

Question:

I'm currently using WinBatch 2002 and was wondering if it's going to work as is on the upcoming Windows 8 on ARM? Or will I need to upgrade to a newer ARM specific version of WinBatch?

Answer:

We have never supported an OS until it was actually released. We plan to continue to support WinBatch on all Windows platforms, however you will need to update your older 2002 software to a more current version, when that becomes available.

Currently WinBatch designed to run on x86 Processors.

ARM running Windows is nothing new. Does anyone remember Windows CE? However, no WinBatch binaries can run on ARM based chips because ARM CPUs have a completely different architecture/instruction set than the x86 family of chips that WinBatch is compiled for.

MSFT made a lot of noise at the CES about making Windows 8 run on ARM based chips but they didn't provide any details. Is it going to be a Windows in name only port like Windows Mobil (Windows 7 Phone) or are they going to actually port a substantial part of the kernel, along with a number of subsystems, and maybe even parts of the WIN32 API to the ARM architecture? I don't think anyone is telling at this point. But the answer to that question and few others will determine whether or not WinBatch will have an ARM compatible version in the future.
