WinBatch Helpfile Problems

Question:

I have just installed the Winbatch+Compiler 2004F version and I am having problems opening WinBatch Help. I can find the .hlp files in Windows Explorer and dbl click to manually open them but from WinBatch Studio they won't open from the menu. Also, when I right click on a command the "Keyword Lookup" does not work.

Anyone else have this problem? Or can help in any way it would be appreciated.

P.S. My OS is Win2K Pro (SP4)

Note: Reinstalled WinBatch multiple times.

Answer:

Not sure, I haven't heard of this type of problem before.

What exactly happens if you try to access the 'Help|Help Contents' menu in WinBatch Studio? Do you get some kind of message?

What exactly happens when you attempt to right click on a keyword then select keyword lookup? Are you prompted with anyting?

When you uninstalled WinBatch. Did you manually remove the WinBatch directory? I am guessing some corrupted menu files, or data are hanging around.

Are you having any other problems with other application help files?

User Reply:

Thanks for the help.

I uninstalled everything again and reinstalled. Still the same problem. I can open them manually. I can also create menu items in the Popup window to open them I am used to the "Keyword lookup" functionality and it's a pain that it doesn't work.

Any other ideas.

I have tried most of my other applications installed and have no problems.

P.S The error I get when trying to run Help from the menu is "Failed to launch Help" When I try the Keyword dookup my curser changes to an hourglass for about a second and then back to normal. Nothing else happens.

Answer:

Have you ever modified the wspopup.MNU file?

Basically when you right click in WinBatch Studio and help file files then choose a help file, it attempts to launch that help file using the WinHelp function. When using the WinHelp function, you're asking Windows to try and manage the help environment. I am wondering if there is some problem with the help environment on this machine.

What happens if you try to execute the following script?

helpfile="c:\program files\winbatch\winbatch.hlp"
WinHelp(Helpfile,"Contents","")

You may also wish to try...

helpfile="c:\program files\winbatch\winbatch.hlp"
Run("winhlp32.exe",helpfile)

Or type the following from the Windows Start|Run command line:

"winhlp32.exe"  "c:\program files\winbatch\winbatch.hlp"

What exactly happens when you try each of these?

User Reply:

You are right. It had something to do with my help environment.

I was poking around yesterday and noticed in my registry that the winhlp32.exe was pointing to c:\winnt\system32\dllcache directory. This dir wasn't in my path environment. Yet when I looked at the HLP file association it was pointing to the system32 directory. What I ended up doing was copying the winhlp32 file to the system32 directory, changed the registry settings to point there and now the help in the WB Studio menu works and the Keyword lookup works too.

I'm not sure why my other application help files worked???

Either way. I have to redo my PC anyways.

I appreciate your time and help
