WinBatch filename extensions

Keywords: WBT file extensions

Question:

I know this is a meagre point, but WinBatch installs files to my hard drive with two extensions I can find no purpose for (just spent the last two hours pouring thru the help files): .WIL & .W32 (actually there are no .W32 files installed, but there is a file association set up between .W32 files and WinBatch in the registry).

What is the purpose of these two file types, and how are they different from .WBT files?

If anyone has the time . . . .

Answer:

  1. WBT=Generic WinBatch files

  2. W32: 32 bit only Winbatch files

  3. W16: 16 bit only WinBatch files

  4. WIL: WIL code files not meant to be directly executable, but rather references by WBT files or something.
The W16 WBT W32 idea is usually for people on a 32 bit OS that want to run 16 bit Winbatch by double clicking on a file. If you give a WBT file a W16 extension AND you have 16 bit WinBatch installed, it will run the W16 file against 16 bit WinBatch.

W32 is aimed only at 32 bit WinBatch.

WBT uses the default WinBatch - almost always 16 bit on 16 bit systems and 32 bit on 32 bit systems.
