FileMenu Running Slow

Keywords: filemenu slow Win7 32 bit

Question:

When I open a folder and then right click in the list of files it takes 5 - 7 seconds for the menu to open. I found that if I delete the FileMenu key from the registry (HKCR\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\) then the menu pops up almost instantly. Any ideas why FileMenu is doing this?
Winbatch is version 2011a
O/S is Windows 7 32 bit

Answer:

Several users have reported this problem on Windows 7 32-bit (but not 64-bit). Considerable time has been spent looking into the problem but no cause or resolution has been found yet. We will keep trying though.

Question:

I have the following computer configuration:

NT4 Pentium 233
MMX w/ 64 MB Ram machine.

and am running the following apps:

SQL Plus
2 Windows Explorer sessions
People Soft (which is a fair resource hog)

and 2-3 others so 7-8 processes running on taskbar.

You stated that I would need more memory to run all these processes at the same time. How much more memory would I need for (approximately) how much faster response?

I know this seems an unfair question, but all I really want is to know if I doubled my ram to 128M would I be talking 10 seconds instead of 20, or would I be able to expect 0.5 second to 1 second response on a right mouse-click on a file in NT Windows Explorer? This is the only thing I am running which seems so exceedingly slow even with all these applications open. (i.e. Right mouse click on a directory is never this slow.)

Answer:

Well. No promises about anything. But you do seem to be loading up your 64K with a lot of serious programs.

Try...

Load up all your programs you want to run, and then see how much memory is being used with:

  1. Control-Alt-Delete
  2. Select TaskManager
  3. Select Performance Tab
Look in the very very lower right of the window. It will show you a memory number like
	80127/128123
The 80127 would be the memory used (probably in excess of 64MB) and the other number would be your PhysicalMemory plus available swap space.

If the first number is bigger than 64MB then you will have a noticeable performance enhancement across all applications is you add more memory. Everything will run faster. If you make sure you have more physical (real) memory than the lower number the machine will be much happier.

If you look at the computers being sold these days (see any catalog mailed you) 128MB and 256MB are common numbers.

We had one case where increasing memory from 64MB to 256MB increased the speed on some complicated operations 10X.

I would look at the memory numbers above and see what your real memory usage is.
