FileMenu and 64 Bit Windows

keywords: Filemenu 32 64 x32 x64 Bit Windows Explorer Context Menu Vista Filemenu.exe

Question:

I upgraded my PC to Vista x64 and after installing WinBatch 2009 I no longer have the 'Edit with Winbatch' context availible when right clicking on a .WBT file in Windows Explorer. I know it is availible in Vista x86 (coworker has it). Anyone have any ideas how I can get that option back under the 64-bit OS?

Answer:

FileMenu is currently still a 32 bit application. Therefore the FileMenu utility only likes the 32 bit version of Windows Explorer. You can run the provided "FileMenu.exe" (under your WinBatch Start Menu) to run the 32 bit version of Windows Explorer. This Explorer will display all of your FileMenu menus.

Background: One of the first things many users notice about Windows x64 Editions is that they do not support any kind of shell integration (Deskbars, Toolbars, Context-menu handlers like WinRAR, etc). The reason for this is that 64-bit processes cannot communicate with 32-bit processes or libraries.

Running the 32-bit shell maintains all the benefits of having a 64-bit OS underneath, allows the full use of standard 32-bit Windows shell integration, while still allowing you to run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications side-by-side.

Recommended:
We recommend launching the provided FileMenu.exe. This can be used to launch the 32 bit version of the windows explorer that contain all of the WIL context menus..

Not recommended:
Changing one registry key. You could just change the "Shell" key to "%systemroot%\SysWow64\Explorer.exe".
