Map Root Drive under Windows 95/NT with MS Client

Keywords: wntAddDrive map root

Question:

Can you tell me if there is a way to map a drive to a directory on an NT server share in a manner similar to a NetWare map root? This functionality appears to be covered for NetWare server connections using the n3MapRoot() function, but I haven't found the equivalent function for connections to NT servers.

What I mean is if there is a share to \\Server\ShareName, then how to I map root a drive to a lower directory on that share, e.g. \\Server\ShareName\Dir1\Dir2? When I try this with wntAddDrive(), I get "Wil Extender Error: 499 Unrecognized network error #53". Using wntAddDrive() to map to \\Server\ShareName works fine.

Answer:

  1. For Windows 2000 and Windows XP wntAddDrive works fine. Changes to the Windows 2000 and XP operating systems allow this. No problem.

  2. For 95/98/ME/NT 4.0 You can only map to shared resources - you cannot map to a lower directory on a share, unless that lower directory is also a share. You can only map to the share names.

  3. If you have a share on the directory you want to map, then wntAddDrive can map to that share.

  4. To map, your UNC must be a valid share point on that server. To determine if it is, browse the network. Find that server. Find the directory. Can you map at that point. Do you have security permissions? If yes in both cases, then you can use wntAddDrive (or w95AddDrive) to do it.
