Can I Attach and Login to 4x in Bindery Mode??

Keywords:

Question:

Is there a way to log into or "attach" to a Netware 4x server and not have to worry about the "Tree" or "Context"? (bindery mode) I need to log into 20 different servers on a daily basis and the Tree and Context they belong to can change.

I I'm getting an error message when I try to use the n3 functions, indicating that I need to use the n4 functions. Then I'm getting the 245 authentication error when I try to do the n4attach to another server in a different tree.

I was wondering if logging in in bindery mode might allow me to forego having to specify each tree in separate n4Logins?

Answer:

If you have bindery emulation enabled on your NetWare 4.x/5.x server and you have the bindery context set to include the container in which the desired user object is located then you can perform a bindery login to that specific server (using the 3.x extenders) instead of logging in to NDS and establishing an authenticated connection to the server with NDS credentials.

NetWare 4.x/5/x servers will accept bindery logins if they have their bindery emulation properly configured. However, a bindery login greatly restricts the type of management that you can do on the server. In a nutshell, you really need to login to each of the NDS trees in which his servers are located in order to effectively manage them.

NDS v8 is going to have some options for group multiple NDS trees together and allowing cross-tree security so that multiple trees do not need to be merged into a single tree in order to unify your adminsitration rights. However, in the absence of NDS v8 all he can do is login to each tree independently or go through the painful process of merging trees.

Question (cont'd):

I have found a workaround and have been running for a week now. Most of the problem was not understanding exactly the differences between Novell 3 and 4. Using the Novell 3 extender has solved the problem, I just had to re-install Netware Services for Bindery support only. Thanks again for your help.

Answer:

Your approach is OK as long as he does not need any actual NDS functionality. In effect, NDS collapses back to a single container in a tree that is unique to the server. Thus, only bindery services are available and NDS is not functional for normal NDS activities. The NetWare 3.x extender functionality should work just fine in that situation. If he sets the passwords identically on all of those servers then his WinBatch script can perform a login/logout with just a variable server name and a fixed set of credentials.
