Searching NT users: Find by Last Name

Keywords: Searching NT users Find by Last Name ADSI

Question:

Is there a way to search the SAM database in NT for a user (or list of users) with a specified last name, without first getting a list of users in the domain (wntUserList)?

User manager takes too long over the WAN, and I would like to be able to pull up a single user account by searching by their last name (full name). The desired effect would be to pull up a list of all users with a specified last name and allow the administrator to select the user to be displayed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:

Should be able to with the beta ADSI extender.

You'd have to do a little research and get the appropriate files from Microsoft's site.

Question (cont'd):

Will this work in a pure NT 4.0 environment? We have no Windows 2000 servers on the network, and I thought Active Directory Service was a feature of Windows 2000 only.

Answer:

AD (Active Directory) is a strictly Win2K but ADSI (Active Directory Services Interface), in theory anyway, works with any directory service that is either ADSI enabled directory or has an ADSI provider available. Of course M$ has created an NT 4.0 provider for ADSI. It comes as part of the DSClient you download from their Web site. The client version you download (there is one for Win 95, Win 98 and NT 4.0) should be for the client OS you will be running our extender on and not for the server you will be communicating with. All 3 versions of the DSClient contain providers for NT, NetWare, NDS, and LDAP (Active Directory).

Question (cont'd):

Thank you for clarifying that for me. I assume that one of our servers needs to be running the server portion of this. Will this work across domains? (i.e. we have a resource domain and a user domain. We would be running this on one of the servers in our resource domain and would like to poll information from the user domain.)

I appreciate your help with this.

Answer:

The requirements for use ADSI with an NT 4.0 server are:
  1. A PC Running NT 4.0 server.

  2. The DS client software on the client machine.

  3. A network connection between the client and server (If they are different machines).
In other words, nothing special is required on the server side for NT 4.0.

It does work across domains.
